“Someone’s been eating my porridge,” growled the Papa bear. Goldilocks fell asleep.Īs she was sleeping, the three bears came home. Then she lay down in the third bed and it was just right.

Then she lay in the second bed, but it was too soft. She lay down in the first bed, but it was too hard. Goldilocks was very tired by this time, so she went upstairs to the bedroom. But just as she settled down into the chair to rest, it broke into pieces! “Ahhh, this chair is just right,” she sighed. So she tried the last and smallest chair. “This chair is too big, too!” she whined. Goldilocks sat in the first chair to rest her feet. So, she walked into the living room where she saw three chairs. “Ahhh, this porridge is just right,” she said happily and she ate it all up.Īfter she’d eaten the breakfasts, she decided she was feeling a little tired. So, she tasted the last bowl of porridge. So, she tasted the porridge from the second bowl. “This porridge is too hot!” she exclaimed. She tasted the porridge from the first bowl. She knocked and, when no one answered, she walked right in.Īt the table in the kitchen, there were three bowls of porridge. Once upon a time, a long time ago, in a far away place, there was a little girl named Goldilocks. For “Goldilocks,” how about re-writing the porridge, the chairs, and the bed part OR how about a different ending OR how about a clearer explanation of antecedent action? Students who re-write fairy tales don’t need to re-write the entire story. I will continue to post fairy tales but will add some kind of teaching idea with each post. I have massaged each offering to make it suit my needs (e.g. I offer them here because, during my teaching career, I couldn’t lay my hands on the text of a variety of well-known fairy tales so that students could work with a specific tale. I think this is an adorable classic that holds a good lesson for all kids. Most students know many of the fairy tales. He also keeps the word choices to very easy to understand vocabulary, making this another great reason to have children read it. His use of minimalism regarding words is brilliant because of how simple it is. A great aspect of this book is how much plot and how much information is packed into this simple, short book. Southey uses bright illustrations and animal characters to draw in young readers attention. Robert Southey writes this traditional story to teach kids the importance of only taking what's yours, or to at least ask beforehand. I think this relates to Goldilocks because she has entered someone else's home and began to touch and use all of their personal possessions and I believe this book is a good informative piece that can teach kids about boundaries. While kids develop they all go through a time where they do not always understand that everything is not for them. Goldilocks as a character is relatable to many young children. Unfortunately for her, life doesn't always turn out the way you want it to. Without thinking of anyone else she uses the bear's things to her advantage. She goes from the kitchen to the family room before ending her adventure in the bedroom. Once she goes inside she begins to look around and make herself at home. When Goldilocks finds the home she does not realize it houses a family of three large bears. That is the beginning of this wonderful classic the world loves.

Perhaps his most enduring contribution to literary history is the immortal children's classic, The Story of the Three Bears, the original Goldilocks story.Ī young girl with beautiful golden hair stumbles upon a cottage in the woods. Southey was also a renowned Portuguese and Spanish scholar, translating a number of works of those two countries into English and writing both a History of Brazil (part of his planned History of Portugal which was never completed) and a History of the Peninsular War.

The latter has rarely been out of print since its publication in 1813 and was adapted for the screen in the 1926 British film, Nelson. His biographies include the life and works of John Bunyan, John Wesley, William Cowper, Oliver Cromwell and Horatio Nelson.

Moreover, he was a prolific letter writer, literary scholar, historian and biographer. Although his fame tends to be eclipsed by that of his contemporaries and friends William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Southey's verse enjoys enduring popularity. Robert Southey was an English poet of the Romantic school, one of the so-called "Lake Poets", and Poet Laureate.
