The BlueJ PLTSE has been designed to support the Java language and was introduced into the introductory teaching of that language in the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) in Semester 1 of the 1999 academic year. It is with the programming environment tools such as Blue (Kolling, ) and BlueJ (Kolling, ) that a true programming language teaching support environment (PLTSE) has been created. Students rated the usefulness of BlueJ quite highly in spite of rating its implementation efficiency as quite low. Student response to a novel educational innovation was basically positive and was supportive of the staff carrying out the innovation.
